Bank of England Soccer Section AGM - Hon Secretary's Report

Season 2000/01 (end July 2001)

After the stupendous efforts of the Bank team's in season 1999/2000, this season can only really be classed as a wet fart. No silverware and no promotions. The nearest we came to a trophy was in the SAL Wilkinson Sword Fair Play award, but alas for the 4th out of 5 seasons, the League decided that there were no worthy winners, a statement that was challenged by the Bank. I think at this point, your Committee would like to commend all players efforts to maintain high standards of discipline on the field this season, except perhaps for one specific Committee member who shall remain nameless (Chris Tilley you are the weakest link !).

Guest selection proved difficult again this year and unfortunately we bade farewell to Mike Massey and Roger De Bunsen. On the plus side however we managed to recruit Messrs.Liggins, Harrington and Timperley all of whom played the majority of their games in the section's top sides this season (In now way will your Committee accept that they are Jonah's of any sort !).

After the September friendlies, I think it fair to say that the season was dominated by the atrocious weather conditions that wreaked havoc amongst League and CUP fixtures alike. Even as early as the February SAL Council meeting, an executive decision was made (with Club backing) to entertain double headers whenever possible in order to complete the fixture program. Furthermore, SAL and LFFA Cups alike were abandoned in favour of AFA Cups and League matches.

Despite these adverse factors, the ones and twos started well in their respective Leagues. The ones remained unbeaten until early in the New Year. The twos also managed to pick up plenty of points in the first half of the campaign and were at one time in the latter part of the season looking an outside bet for promotion, but as the stronger sides came through especially after the decision on double headers, they finished a very creditable 4th in their first season back in Div 2 and can surely build on that next season. The firsts looked promotion certs all season and certainly had the potential to win the League, but alas a disastrous 3-1 defeat in their last home game meant their fate lay in the hands of others and as results went against them, they finished a heart wrenching 3rd.

The 3s had a mixed season, but maintained a good standard and ended up mid table, again in their first season back in Div2 and along with the twos will be hoping to build upon this base for next season. Unfortunately, the League presented a massive hurdle for the 4s and 5s neither of whom have much joy to report, both finishing their respective seasons languishing in the lower reaches of their 3rd Divisions. The fives I am told though have now built a very strong defence and are no longer the pushovers they once were.
